Apple quickly sold out of its limited in-store inventory of the new iPhone Duo, a foldable phone that starts at $1,999 in the U.S., when it went on sale Friday, The Business Times reported.

Customers placing new orders on Apple's website are now being offered delivery at the end of January, though some have seen shipping estimates move up to as soon as November or December, the paper reported.

Price and availability

Apple said the iPhone Duo comes in star white and night sky and starts at $1,999 in the U.S., in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage capacities. Pre-orders began Oct. 16 in more than 70 countries and regions, with availability beginning Friday, Oct. 23, according to Apple's newsroom. Apple said it would go on sale in 28 more countries and regions on Friday, Oct. 30.

Launch day

U.S. Apple stores received roughly 50 to 200-plus Duo units per location, and they went fast, The Business Times reported. At a store in Lawrence Township, New Jersey, the 256GB and 512GB versions sold out within the first half hour, leaving the pricier 1TB and 2TB models, according to the paper.

At Apple's Fifth Avenue store in New York, the line stretched multiple blocks around 5 a.m., three hours before the doors opened to iPhone Duo customers, the paper reported.
