Apple on Tuesday announced its first Macs built on its new M6 chip, a 14-inch MacBook Pro and a 24-inch iMac, in a pair of press releases on its Newsroom site.
Pre-orders opened Wednesday, Oct. 28, in 35 countries and regions including the U.S., and both machines begin arriving to customers and in stores on Friday, Nov. 6, Apple said. Both ship with macOS 27.
14-inch MacBook Pro
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999 in the U.S., or $1,899 with education pricing, according to Apple. It comes in space black and silver, with 16GB of unified memory standard, configurable up to 32GB.
Apple says the M6 chip in the laptop has a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, two more cores each than before, and a "Dual 16-core Neural Engine." The company claims up to 30% faster graphics and up to 25% faster on-device AI workloads compared with M5, and up to 24 hours of battery life, which it calls the longest ever in a Mac. It also adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, Apple said.
"With the powerful M6 chip, we're taking performance to the next level," Shelly Goldberg, Apple's vice president of Hardware Engineering, said in the release.
iMac
The new iMac with M6 starts at $1,499 in the U.S. for a model with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU ($1,449 with education pricing), and at $1,699 for a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU version ($1,599 education), Apple said. It keeps a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display and comes in seven colors: blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver.
Apple claims the iMac delivers up to 2x faster graphics and up to 5x faster on-device AI performance than the M4 model, and up to 18x faster performance than the most popular Intel-based iMac. The company says it adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, available 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports and storage it says is up to 2x faster.
What is not known
All performance and battery figures come from Apple's own testing and have not been independently benchmarked. Apple's releases do not give prices outside the U.S. in the text GROKsiNEWS.com reviewed.
