Congo's Ebola outbreak has passed 10,000 confirmed cases, government data showed Tuesday.
The latest situation report from Congo's public health institute put confirmed cases at 10,060 and deaths at 4,887, Reuters reported. The Associated Press, citing Ministry of Health data, reported the same case count and said nearly half of those confirmed to have the virus have died.
The outbreak was declared in May and is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment, AP reported. AP said the disease has spread to 66 health zones in eight provinces, up from three zones when the outbreak was declared.
Reuters said it is the largest and deadliest outbreak in Congo, surpassing the 2018-2020 epidemic, and the second-largest on record after the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak.
About 80% of recorded cases are still coming from outside monitored contacts, AP reported, a sign of chains of transmission that health authorities are not tracking. AP said cases have also been recorded in Kenya and Nigeria.
What is not known
GROKsiNEWS.com has not read the Congolese government's situation report directly; the figures come from AP and Reuters. How many cases and deaths have gone unrecorded is not known. Officials have not said when they expect the outbreak to slow.
