Update (Nov. 4, 2026, 8:10 a.m. ET): This story has been updated with Tuesday's closing stock prices, September job openings and factory orders data, Pfizer's raised forecast and AMD's results released after the close. Premarket reporting from early Tuesday follows.
Stocks close mixed as chipmakers rebound
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 197.26 points, or 0.38%, to 51,786.72 on Tuesday, weighed down by Apple, while the S&P 500 rose 0.36% to 7,568.92 and the Nasdaq composite gained 0.83% to 25,372.01, CNBC reported. The S&P 500's gain ended a three-day losing streak as chip stocks rebounded, CNBC said.
Apple closed down 1.9% at $331.90, after trading as low as $325.33, according to Yahoo Finance data. Palantir closed down 1.65% at $175.40, according to StockAnalysis price history, after falling more than 7% in premarket trading. Advanced Micro Devices rose 3.65% to close at $483.90 ahead of its report, while Broadcom, Micron and Nvidia also gained, CNBC reported.
AMD beats estimates and forecasts higher sales
After the close, AMD reported third-quarter revenue of $13.4 billion, up 45% from a year earlier, and adjusted earnings of $2.09 per share, the company said in its earnings release. Its data center segment revenue rose 97% from a year earlier on record sales of its Instinct GPUs and EPYC CPUs, AMD said. Analysts had expected adjusted earnings of $1.95 a share on revenue of $13.09 billion, according to LSEG estimates cited by CNBC. AMD shares were down about 2% in premarket trading early Wednesday, at $474.10 as of 8:04 a.m. ET, according to Yahoo Finance data.
Pfizer raises its forecast
Pfizer raised its full-year 2026 revenue forecast by $1.5 billion at the midpoint, to $62 billion to $64 billion from $60.5 billion to $62.5 billion, and lifted its adjusted earnings forecast to $2.95 to $3.05 a share from $2.80 to $3.00, the company said in its third-quarter earnings release. Third-quarter revenue was $16.6 billion, and adjusted earnings were 87 cents a share, Pfizer said.
Job openings little changed; factory orders rise
U.S. job openings were little changed at 7.5 million in September, and the job openings rate held at 4.5%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said in its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Quits increased to 3.4 million, while the quits rate was little changed at 2.1%, the BLS said. Hires were 5.4 million and layoffs and discharges were 1.6 million. August openings were revised up by 111,000 to 7.2 million.
New orders for manufactured goods rose $12.2 billion, or 1.8%, to $677.2 billion in September, the third straight monthly increase, after a 0.3% gain in August, the Census Bureau reported.
Before the bell, Nov. 3
U.S. stock futures were mixed early Tuesday as Americans voted in the midterm elections, with Dow futures lower and shares of Apple and Palantir falling in premarket trading after their quarterly reports.
As of 7:14 a.m. ET, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were down about 440 points, or 0.9%, S&P 500 futures were down 0.19% and Nasdaq-100 futures were up 0.1%, according to Yahoo Finance market data. World shares fell and U.S. futures declined as investors awaited the outcome of the vote, The Associated Press reported.
On Monday, the S&P 500 fell 0.5% and the Nasdaq composite fell 1.1%, while the Dow rose 0.4%, AP reported.
Apple falls on margin outlook
Apple shares were down about 3.9% in premarket trading at $325.19 as of 7:24 a.m. ET, compared with Monday's close of $338.32, according to Yahoo Finance data.
The company's fiscal fourth-quarter sales of $114.48 billion beat analysts' estimates of $113.39 billion, and profit of $2.10 per share topped estimates of $1.99, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters. But Apple said it expects gross margin of 45% to 46% in the quarter ending in December, down from 47.9% in the fourth quarter, as memory-chip costs keep rising, Reuters reported. It forecast services revenue growth of 8% to 9%, below analysts' expectations of 10.7%.
"We did see higher memory costs as compared to the June quarter, which was partially offset by the benefit of carrying inventory and lower costs on certain non-memory components," CEO John Ternus said, according to Reuters. Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh said on the investor call that Apple expects memory costs to keep rising into next year, Reuters reported. Sales in China were $17.54 billion, below the $18.58 billion analysts expected, according to Visible Alpha data cited by Reuters.
Palantir drops despite a beat
Palantir shares were down about 7.4% in premarket trading as of 7:24 a.m. ET, according to Yahoo Finance data. The company beat Wall Street's third-quarter estimates, and its U.S. commercial revenue topped its government revenue, CNBC reported. Revenue nearly doubled from a year earlier to more than $2 billion, CNBC said, but investors focused on slower growth in U.S. commercial total contract value bookings, a measure of signed deals, according to an analyst note cited by CNBC.
What was ahead Tuesday: AMD and JOLTS
Advanced Micro Devices was scheduled to report fiscal third-quarter results after the market closed Tuesday and to hold a call at 2 p.m. PT (5 p.m. ET), according to AMD's investor relations calendar. AMD shares were up about 2.8% in premarket trading as of 7:24 a.m. ET after closing Monday at $466.84, according to Yahoo Finance data.
Before the 10 a.m. ET release of the September Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, economists had expected 7.1 million job openings, according to Yahoo Finance's economic calendar and the BLS release schedule; the BLS reported 7.5 million, as noted above. The October jobs report is scheduled for Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET, the BLS schedule shows.
Oil higher
Brent crude futures traded at $106.27 a barrel as of 7:14 a.m. ET, up about 1.4%, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $98.40, up about 2.0%, according to Yahoo Finance data. In its earlier report, AP said Brent was up 1.7% at $106.58 and U.S. crude was up 1.5% at $97.88. Brent closed Monday at $104.77 after a recent 7.6% drop, AP reported.
In Asia, South Korea's Kospi fell 4% and Taiwan's Taiex slid 3.8% as chip stocks dropped, while in early European trading Germany's DAX fell 0.9%, AP reported.
