Ravens QB Lamar Jackson to have thumb surgery, go on injured reserve
Coach Jesse Minter said Jackson hurt his right thumb on his first play back in Sunday's 36-10 loss at Buffalo. Asked if it could end his season, Minter said "potentially."

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson will have surgery and be placed on injured reserve after hurting his right thumb on the first play of his return from an ankle injury, coach Jesse Minter said Sunday.
The Ravens posted Minter's announcement on X at 4:34 p.m. ET Sunday, after Baltimore's 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park, New York. "Coach Minter announces that QB Lamar Jackson will require surgery and be placed on injured reserve," the team wrote.
Is his season over?
Minter did not rule it out. Asked whether it could be season-ending, he said "potentially," according to the team's website. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport quoted Minter as saying "we'll see." The Associated Press reported that Minter said Jackson may not return in 2026.
The team has not said how long Jackson is expected to be out.
"It's tough," Minter said, according to the Ravens. "When it happened, I think at the time, you're just hoping that maybe it's something small, and then I think pretty quickly kind of realized what had happened."
Hurt on the first snap
Jackson had missed three games with an ankle injury. On Baltimore's first offensive play Sunday, his right hand hit Bills pass rusher Greg Rousseau as he threw, the Ravens said. AP said the pass was intended for Zay Flowers.
Jackson grabbed his hand and went to the sideline and then the locker room, according to the team. He came back to the sideline in the third quarter with a cast on his right hand, the Ravens reported.
"That first play was super unfortunate," right tackle Roger Rosengarten said, according to the team. "One hand away. Got to get more space away from Lamar, especially on the first one."
Quarterback questions
Backup Tyler Huntley took over but hurt his toe in the second quarter, the Ravens said. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano then made his NFL debut. He went 10 of 21 for 91 yards with an interception and lost a fumble, according to the team.
AP reported that Minter had no immediate update on Huntley and that Baltimore will likely need to add a quarterback. Fagnano told reporters he expects to be healthy enough to play Thursday, AP said.
The Ravens are 4-4 and have lost three straight, according to AP. They host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.
Minter, who took over as Baltimore's coach this season, said his job is to keep the team together. "We've got to really pour into that belief in the guys we have, and move forward," he said, according to AP.
"We have a game in four days, so we have to be able to bounce back," tight end Mark Andrews said, according to the team.
