Plane skids off runway at Las Vegas airport and hits perimeter fence; FAA extends hold on some inbound flights

Harry Reid International Airport said there were no known injuries "at this time" and closed two runways for inspection.

As of 3:15 p.m. ET, Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026

A general aviation aircraft skidded off a runway while departing Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on Sunday and struck the airport's perimeter fence, the airport said.

"At approximately 11 a.m., upon departure, a general aviation aircraft skid off runway 1L at LAS and made contact with the perimeter fence. There are no known injuries at this time," the airport said on X at 3:01 p.m. ET. Eleven a.m. in Las Vegas is 2 p.m. ET.

The airport has not said who or how many people were aboard, and no information on injuries has been released beyond "no known injuries at this time." It has not identified the aircraft or said what caused the incident.

Runways 1R and 1L "will be closed for inspection, and travelers may experience some delays," the airport said, adding that it would provide updates.

Ground stop extended

The Federal Aviation Administration has held some Las Vegas-bound flights at their departure airports since 1:46 p.m. ET, citing an "aircraft emergency," according to its national airspace status page. The ground stop was first set to end at 3:15 p.m. ET. The FAA then extended it to 4:15 p.m. ET and rated the chance of a further extension as "medium".

At first the stop covered flights departing from the airspace of five regional air traffic control centers, which the FAA listed as "(1stTier) ZLA ZLC ZDV ZOA ZAB." Those centers are based in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Denver, Oakland and Albuquerque. With the extension, the FAA widened it to a "2ndTier" list of 10 centers, adding those based in Houston, Fort Worth, Seattle, Kansas City and Minneapolis.

The FAA's advisory said runway 01R/19L is "expected unavailable" and that a timeline for reopening runway 19R/01L had not been set. It said the FAA expects to switch from the ground stop to a ground delay program, which spaces out arrivals.

As of this article's time stamp, the FAA also listed departure delays of 16 to 30 minutes at Las Vegas, and increasing, because of a "disabled aircraft" on a runway.

GROKsiNEWS.com found no statement on the incident from the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board or Clark County, and no coverage from AP, Reuters or Las Vegas news outlets, as of this article's time stamp.
