New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez on Wednesday sued Jeffrey Epstein's longtime attorney and accountant, accusing them of concealing his sex trafficking operation at a ranch near Santa Fe, The Associated Press reported.
The civil lawsuit against attorney Darren K. Indyke and accountant Richard D. Kahn alleges that the two men helped facilitate, finance and conceal Epstein's sex trafficking operation, including the abuse of girls and young women at Zorro Ranch in Santa Fe County, according to the attorney general's office. The suit also names the Estate of Jeffrey Epstein and the 1953 Trust, which holds the estate's assets.
Indyke worked as Epstein's attorney for roughly two decades, AP reported. Both he and Kahn have testified before a congressional committee that they did not know about Epstein's abuse, according to AP. The lawsuit is a civil case, not a criminal prosecution.
Blocking estate payments
The state asks the court to prevent Indyke and Kahn from receiving estate payments while the case proceeds, the attorney general's office said. The office said the estate is currently valued at more than $107 million and that the complaint states the two men are eligible for bequests of $50 million and $25 million, subject to the availability of funds.
"Those resources rightfully belong in the hands of survivors," Torrez said, referring to victims of Epstein's abuse, according to AP.
The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico, brings claims under the federal Trafficking Victims Protection Act and the New Mexico Racketeering Act, according to the attorney general's office. It alleges that Epstein ran a sex trafficking enterprise and that Indyke and Kahn knowingly participated in it, using their positions and Epstein's accounts and companies to finance and conceal the abuse, the office said.
According to the attorney general's office, the complaint alleges that Indyke handled the 2011 transfer of Zorro Ranch's title to a company Epstein controlled, and that between 2011 and 2019 Indyke received more than $16 million from Epstein and related entities while Kahn received more than $10 million.
Beyond blocking payments, the suit asks the court to declare that the two men engaged in racketeering and trafficking activity, to require them to divest Epstein-related interests, and to award damages, restitution and disgorgement of benefits to survivors, the office said.
What Torrez said
"Jeffrey Epstein did not operate alone, and his death does not end the pursuit of accountability for the people who helped make his crimes possible," Torrez said in a statement. "The allegations in this lawsuit describe a network of people and financial arrangements that helped sustain and conceal the abuse of vulnerable girls and young women, including here in New Mexico. Those who allegedly enabled this exploitation should not be allowed to profit from it while survivors continue to live with its consequences."
Two adult survivors of Epstein's abuse joined Torrez at the announcement and support the state's action, his office said. The criminal investigation Torrez announced earlier this year remains ongoing, according to the office.
The ranch
Epstein bought the ranch in Stanley, New Mexico, about 30 miles south of Santa Fe, in 1993, AP reported. Epstein never faced charges in New Mexico, according to AP. The property was sold by Epstein's estate in 2023, with the proceeds going toward creditors, AP reported.
