Update (Oct. 21, 2026, 4:26 p.m. ET): This article has been updated with a Reuters report from earlier Wednesday that Yemen's Houthis denied carrying out military operations toward Saudi Arabia that day.

Two foreign residents were killed and two others were injured Wednesday after Saudi air defenses intercepted a drone trying to target a facility at Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oilfield, an official source at Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy said, according to the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

The interception took place Wednesday morning at the field in the kingdom's Eastern Region, the official said, according to SPA.

What the ministry said

The incident caused a fire in a vehicle belonging to a contractor working at the field, outside the facility's perimeter, with "no impact on operations," the official said, according to SPA.

"The attempted attack resulted in the deaths of two residents, one Filipino and one Nepali, and injuries to two residents, one Pakistani and one Indian," SPA reported, citing the official. SPA's headline said the two were killed and two injured "by falling debris."

The official said the competent authorities had responded to the incident and taken the necessary measures. The official also expressed condolences to the families of the dead and wished the injured a speedy recovery, SPA reported.

Reuters also reported the deaths and the lack of impact on operations, citing the state news agency's report of the ministry official's account.

What is not known

The ministry did not say who launched the drone or where it was launched from. No claim of responsibility appeared in the ministry's statement or the Reuters report.

Earlier Wednesday, before the Saudi Energy Ministry's statement on Shaybah, Reuters reported by 7:27 a.m. ET that Yemen's Houthis said they had neither launched drones toward the Saudi holy city of Medina that day nor conducted military operations toward Saudi Arabia. The comments came from the Iran-aligned group's military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, and followed the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen saying it had intercepted drones over Medina and the Eastern region, according to Reuters. The Reuters report did not mention Shaybah.

The dead and injured were not named.
