Storm Boelo brings amber wind warnings to Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland and northern England
The Met Office says gusts of 60-70 mph are expected widely, with up to 80 mph on exposed coasts. Network Rail is closing some lines in Scotland, and Met Éireann has an orange wind warning for five Irish counties.
As of 4:09 p.m. ET, Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026
The Met Office has issued amber wind warnings for Storm Boelo across mainland Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and the far north of England for Saturday night and Sunday, with gusts of 60-70 mph expected widely and up to 80 mph possible on exposed coasts.
The amber warning sits within wider yellow warnings that stretch further south into England and north Wales and cover all of Northern Ireland, the Met Office said.
"People should prepare for the potential for disruption, particularly to travel and power supplies. Secure loose items outside, plan ahead if you are travelling and keep up to date with the latest forecast and warnings for your area," Met Office Chief Forecaster Jason Kelly said. He said heavy rain would add to the hazard, especially in the north.
Ireland
Met Éireann has an orange wind warning for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, valid from 2 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday Irish time, for gale-force westerly winds with severe and damaging gusts, its warnings page shows. It lists likely impacts including power outages, fallen trees, large coastal waves and disruption to air, rail, bus and ferry services.
The service also issued a red marine violent storm warning from Slyne Head to Rossan Point to Fair Head, valid from 7 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, and yellow wind warnings for other counties.
Rail closures in Scotland
Network Rail said rail lines in the west and north of Scotland will close during the storm, with services south and west of Kilwinning stopping from 9 p.m. Saturday and the Oban and Mallaig lines closing from around 10 p.m. On Sunday, the line between Kyle of Lochalsh and Achnashellach and the railway between Wick and Helmsdale will be closed from the start of service, Network Rail said.
Trains will run at reduced speeds across large parts of Scotland from late Saturday into Sunday, and passengers should expect significant disruption and longer journeys, according to Network Rail.
After Storm Austen
Storm Boelo follows Storm Austen, which brought strong winds to parts of the UK on Friday, the Met Office said. Gusts of 76 mph were recorded at St Mary's Airport in the Isles of Scilly, it said. More unsettled weather is expected next week, with a wind warning already issued for northern parts of the UK on Tuesday, according to the forecaster.
