Drone strikes hit power stations in southeast Sudan on Monday, cutting electricity across four states that make up about half of the territory held by the army, the state-run Sudan Electricity Holding Company said, according to Reuters.

The company blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which have been fighting Sudan's army since April 2023. That attribution is the company's: the RSF did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters, and Reuters said it could not independently verify the company's account.

Power was cut in Sennar, Al Qadarif (also known as Gedaref), White Nile and Gezira states, threatening the stability of the whole national grid, the company said. The strikes hit stations in the towns and areas of Sinja, El Hawata, Al Fao and Mashkour, as well as Al-Junaid in Gezira State, causing "severe damage" and "major destruction" to equipment, it said.

Drones struck the El Geneid transformer station in eastern Gezira at 2:30 a.m. local time, knocking it out of service, sources at the El Geneid sugar factory told the Sudan Tribune. The Sennar state government said a drone attack on the Singa transformer station on Monday morning caused material damage and injured security guards, who were taken for treatment, according to the Sudan Tribune. No deaths were reported in the sources reviewed, and the company did not give a timeline for restoring power.

The United Nations has warned that attacks on power infrastructure threaten health and other services for millions of people already hit hard by the conflict, Reuters reported. Both sides have stepped up drone strikes this month, including attacks on RSF-held Nyala and on Khartoum airport, which the army holds, Reuters said.
