The son of Myanmar's former leader Aung San Suu Kyi said Thursday that he had spoken with his detained mother after more than five years, AFP reported.

"Today, I was finally able to speak with my mother, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, after more than five years. Hearing her voice again means more than words can express," Kim Aris said in a post on Facebook, according to AFP.

"One conversation is not regular family access"

"I am deeply grateful to everyone who has stood by my mother and me. I believe your voices helped make this moment possible," Aris wrote, AFP reported. "But my mother is 81 and remains unjustly detained. One conversation is not regular family access."

Suu Kyi is under house arrest in the capital, Naypyidaw, according to Myanmar authorities, AFP reported. She has been held since she was removed from power in a 2021 military coup. Aris lives in the United Kingdom. Images with his post appeared to show him standing outside the Myanmar embassy in London, according to AFP.

What is not known

It was not immediately clear how Aris spoke to his mother, AFP reported. AFP's report does not include comment from Myanmar's military authorities.
