Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff escaped unhurt Sunday evening after assailants fired shots at his car in the Juhu area of Mumbai, India, police said, according to Indian news reports.
The shooting happened around 7 p.m. local time (9:30 a.m. ET) as Shroff was leaving after work, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohit Garg said, The Hindu reported. Juhu police said Shroff had attended a birthday celebration at Pushpa Park and was preparing to leave when the shots were fired, The Times of India reported. The newspaper said three assailants on motorcycles fired seven rounds at the car, which was about 350 meters from Pushpa Park and the Juhu police station, then fled.
Two people were injured: Shroff's driver, who suffered an injury to his left hand, and a bystander, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to Garg. The Times of India reported that both were hit by bullets and taken to hospitals. Police had not released a detailed update on their conditions as of this article's time stamp.
Police formed 15 teams to track down the attackers, The Times of India and News18 reported. The Hindu reported that police had detained one suspect. Police had not announced any arrest or charges as of this article's time stamp.
Claim of responsibility unverified
A social media post attributed to people linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for the attack, The Times of India reported. Police said they were verifying the claim, the newspaper reported. Garg declined to comment on the post, according to The Hindu. GROKsiNEWS.com has not independently verified the post or who wrote it.
Officials react
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the state's home minister, directed Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti to investigate swiftly and take strict action, The Hindu reported. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde told the newspaper: "We will not tolerate such gangs. This incident is unfortunate".
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit told The Hindu it was the second such shooting in the area in recent months, citing gunfire earlier this year at director Rohit Shetty's bungalow.
Why it matters
The attack on one of India's best-known film stars has renewed concern in Mumbai's film industry about gang violence, and police have not yet said who was behind it.
