Kings say Ben Simmons tore right Achilles at practice, will have surgery

The team announced the injury days before the regular season. It gave no timeline, but Simmons is expected to miss the 2026-27 season, according to The Athletic and ESPN.

As of 7:23 p.m. ET, Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026

Sacramento Kings guard Ben Simmons tore his right Achilles tendon at practice Sunday and will have surgery, the team announced.

"Sacramento Kings guard Ben Simmons was injured during a live drill in practice on Sunday, Oct. 18. An MRI revealed a torn right Achilles tendon. Simmons will undergo surgery. Further updates will be provided as appropriate," the Kings said in a press release.

The team did not give a recovery timeline. Simmons is expected to miss the 2026-27 season, according to an anonymous team source cited by The Athletic. ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the MRI confirmed a "season-ending" tear.

Charania first reported at 6:34 p.m. ET, citing sources, that Simmons was believed to have torn his Achilles. The Kings' announcement followed.

Simmons, 30, missed all of last season and signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Kings, according to The Athletic, Sportsnet and Yahoo Sports. In Friday's preseason finale, a 126-97 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, he had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, according to the Kings.

Simmons was Rookie of the Year and a three-time All-Star with the Philadelphia 76ers. He later played for the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, Sportsnet reported.
