Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez taken to hospital after head collision in 2-0 win at Everton
Martinez was stretchered off after colliding with Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said it was a concussion and that the goalkeeper left the stadium conscious.
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken to the hospital on Saturday, Oct. 17, after a head collision during Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League win at Everton, ESPN and BBC Sport reported.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said Martinez, 34, had suffered a concussion. The Argentina international joined Chelsea from Aston Villa, BBC Sport noted. "What we know is that he left the stadium conscious and is now in hospital undergoing precautionary tests," Alonso said, according to BBC Sport. "We need to wait," he added. Chelsea published an update from Alonso on its website.
What happened
Midway through the second half, Martinez rushed off his line to deal with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's free kick and collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Chelsea's own report said he collided with two Everton players. ESPN put the collision in the 67th minute and BBC Sport in the 68th.
Both players were treated on the field. Branthwaite recovered quickly, ESPN reported, while Martinez received extended treatment and was taken off on a stretcher while receiving oxygen.
Mike Penders, 21, replaced him in the 75th minute after a lengthy stoppage and made his Premier League debut for Chelsea. Eleven minutes of stoppage time were added at the end of the match, ESPN reported.
The result
Pedro Neto scored both goals at Hill Dickinson Stadium. "This win is for him," Neto told TNT Sports, according to ESPN.
The win ended Everton's unbeaten start to the season, ESPN reported. It also gave Chelsea its first Premier League clean sheet in nine months, BBC Sport said.
Everton manager David Moyes said he had not yet seen the injury. "I hope he's fine. I really do," he said, ESPN reported.
What's next
As of about 1:25 p.m. ET Saturday, Chelsea had not posted a further medical update beyond Alonso's postmatch comments.
BBC Sport reported that Martinez's availability for Chelsea's next three matches is in doubt. Those are Premier League games against Tottenham and Manchester United, with a Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool in between. If tests confirm a concussion, Premier League protocols typically require a return-to-play process of at least 14 days, BBC Sport said.
