Four people were killed and approximately 15 others were injured in three separate shootings in Dallas' Deep Ellum entertainment district early Sunday after Halloween celebrations, Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said.
"Right now, in total, we have four people that are deceased from three separate scenes, and we have approximately 15 others that have been injured," Comeaux said at a Sunday morning news conference, according to FOX 4. He said the number of injured could change because some people took themselves to hospitals.
Three scenes, blocks apart
According to a preliminary police investigation, the first shooting happened at about 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street, the second at about 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street and the third at about 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street, FOX 4 reported. The scenes were blocks apart.
Investigators have not determined whether the shootings are connected. "The detectives and officers are still trying to put everything together to understand exactly what happened on each scene and to see if anything is related," Comeaux said, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. "At this time, we have no information that they are related, but we're still doing an investigation to try to figure that out at this time."
Arrests, but no charges announced
Comeaux said some arrests were made but did not say how many or what charges were involved, The Associated Press reported. "We are interviewing some individuals right now that we have arrested, still trying to figure out exactly how it ties into ... all the shootings out here," he said, according to NBC 5. Police have not publicly identified anyone in custody, and no charges had been announced.
Police have not released the names of the people who were killed or details of the injured people's conditions. A motive has not been given.
Comeaux said the department had added officers in Deep Ellum ahead of the Halloween crowds. "We were fully staffed out here," he said, according to FOX 4. "We looked at the plan. We knew it was Saturday night. We knew it was Halloween, so we were staffed properly." He said officers less than two blocks away ran toward the gunfire, and that one officer revived an injured person. No officers were injured, AP reported.
"This is completely unacceptable for it to take place in Dallas, and we're going to do everything that we need to do to get everyone in custody that's responsible for this," Comeaux said, according to NBC 5.
Mayor Eric L. Johnson said in a statement that "this kind of violence is always unacceptable in our city," FOX 4 reported.
Police asked anyone with photos, videos or social media clips from Deep Ellum during the shootings to share them with investigators. Anyone with information can contact Sgt. Boz Rojas at 214-671-3598 or boz.rojas@dallaspolice.gov, police said.
The Dallas shootings were the deadliest of several over the Halloween weekend, largely in nightlife districts, that left at least six people dead nationwide, AP reported.
