Houthi forces have advanced to within 80 kilometers (50 miles) of Aden, the temporary seat of Yemen's internationally recognized government, four military sources told Reuters on Monday. GROKsiNEWS.com could not independently verify the advance.
According to the sources cited by Reuters, fighting was taking place at a military camp at the entrance to Tur al-Bahah, about 50 km from the capital of Lahj province and about 80 km from Aden. The sources said the Houthis had taken the Al-Maqatirah district in about three days, and that government-aligned forces had retreated toward Tur al-Bahah.
The advance threatens the road linking Aden and Taiz, the sources told Reuters. Reuters reported that the advance brings the Houthis closer to Aden than at any point since early 2015.
Government silence; unverified video
Yemen's information minister did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Reuters reported. Reuters said it could not immediately verify a video posted by Houthi official Hamid Rizq that purported to show the group's fighters in the area. GROKsiNEWS.com has not verified the video.
What is not known
No other news agency or Yemeni government or Saudi-led coalition statement confirming the advance had been seen as of this report. It is not known how many fighters are involved, the extent of casualties, or whether government forces have halted or reversed the advance.
