Update (Oct. 21, 2026, 4:57 p.m. ET): This article has been updated with the Kyiv City Military Administration's latest count of five people injured, which supersedes its earlier count of two.
A ballistic missile attack on Kyiv on Wednesday afternoon hit a car-service building and a private house in the city's Dniprovskyi district, and debris struck a second private house, where "people may be under the rubble," the Kyiv City State Administration and Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said at 4:43 p.m. ET that, as of 11:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. ET), the number of people injured had risen to five and that all were receiving the necessary medical help. That is its latest count, superseding the two injured it reported at 3:57 p.m. ET. Klitschko and the city state administration said at 3:53 p.m. and 3:54 p.m. ET that one woman had been injured in the Dniprovskyi district and that medics had taken her to a hospital. No deaths had been reported as of 4:57 p.m. ET.
What officials said
The Kyiv City Military Administration declared a red-level air raid alert over a missile threat at 3:06 p.m. ET and urged residents to go to the nearest shelters. At 3:08 p.m. ET, Ukraine's Air Force warned of a "ballistic missile in the direction of Kyiv."
"Explosions in the capital. Kyiv is under ballistic attack. Stay in shelters!" Klitschko and the city state administration posted on Telegram at 3:12 p.m. ET.
At 3:31 p.m. ET, the military administration said that, according to preliminary information, private residential houses in the Dniprovskyi district had been damaged by what it called an enemy strike. Three minutes later it said that at another location in the district, a gas station had been damaged, and that "according to preliminary information, there are injured."
In an identical update posted at 3:49 p.m. ET by Klitschko and at 3:50 p.m. ET by the city state administration, officials said: "In the Dniprovskyi district, a hit on a car-service building. And also on a private residential house. In the same district, debris hit another private residential house. People may be under the rubble."
That update described the second site differently from the military administration's earlier post, saying debris had fallen near a gas station at another location in the Dniprovskyi district. "Emergency services are heading to the sites," it said.
The city state administration announced the air raid all-clear at 3:58 p.m. ET.
At 4:42 p.m. ET, the military administration declared a new air raid alert over a drone threat. At 4:48 p.m. ET, it declared a red-level missile threat for the city and urged residents to stay in shelters until the all-clear.
What is not known
Officials had not said whether anyone was found under the rubble of the damaged house as of 4:57 p.m. ET. The military administration did not say where the five people were hurt or how seriously.
The Air Force had not said how many missiles were launched at Kyiv or how many were intercepted. Ukraine's State Emergency Service had not posted a report on the afternoon attack on its national or Kyiv Telegram channels.
