Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv kill 1 and injure 15, emergency service says; Southern Bridge closed
Ukraine's Air Force counted 2 ballistic missiles and 280 drones in its preliminary tally. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy put the night's ballistic missiles at 16. The two figures have not been reconciled.
As of 9:09 a.m. ET, Oct. 27, 2026
Russian attacks on Kyiv that began Monday evening and continued overnight killed one person and injured 15, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said early Tuesday.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said in its 8:30 a.m. local roundup (2:51 a.m. ET) that 12 of the 15 injured were in the hospital. It reported damage in three districts. In Desnianskyi, a university teaching building, dormitories and high-rise apartment buildings were damaged. In Obolonskyi, a fire broke out in non-residential buildings and was put out. In Holosiivskyi, "transport infrastructure" was damaged. The killed person has not been publicly identified.
The emergency service said the Desnianskyi damage was from Monday evening and that two people were hurt in two overnight fires in Obolonskyi. Mayor Vitali Klitschko and the city's military administration also reported strikes in Podilskyi district late Monday ET: Klitschko said an administrative building was hit there.
Southern Bridge and metro
Klitschko said the Southern Bridge was closed to traffic while specialists assessed the damage. He said green-line metro service between Osokorky and Chervonyi Khutir stations was suspended because of a hit on metro infrastructure on the bridge. All red-line stations reopened after crews repaired overnight damage between Darnytsia and Chernihivska and at the exits of Lisova station, he said. The city added buses between the two banks of the Dnipro.
Air Force count
Ukraine's Air Force said in preliminary figures as of 9 a.m. local (posted 3:08 a.m. ET) that from 6 p.m. Monday, Russia launched Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles and 280 Shahed-type and other drones, with Kyiv the main target. It said 257 targets were shot down or suppressed: 2 ballistic missiles and 255 drones. It recorded hits at 25 locations and falling debris at 16. It said several drones were still in the air, so the count could change.
Zelenskyy's figures
In a Telegram post at 4:19 a.m. ET, Zelenskyy said Russia used 16 ballistic missiles and more than 280 drones overnight. That is a higher ballistic-missile count than the Air Force's preliminary figure, and neither has explained the difference. Zelenskyy said the number injured in Monday evening's strike on a university campus and the surrounding area had risen to 12, five of them students and university staff. He said Russia fired ballistic missiles again while emergency crews were working at the site of the first strike, and that the Southern Bridge was among the places hit in Kyiv.
Zelenskyy said there were also strikes on the Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kherson and Chernivtsi regions, mostly on energy, logistics and city infrastructure. He said "artificial and prolonged delays" in deliveries of interceptor packages for Patriot and NASAMS air-defense systems are "directly helping" Russia. He did not say who was responsible for the delays.
What is not known
The person killed has not been identified, and officials have not said where in the city the death happened. The Air Force count of 2 ballistic missiles and Zelenskyy's count of 16 have not been reconciled; it is not clear whether they cover the same period or weapons. The city military administration's morning roundup listed three damaged districts and did not mention Podilskyi, where the mayor reported a hit late Monday ET. The extent of damage to the Southern Bridge and when it will reopen are not known. Russia has not commented on the targets. The figures are official Ukrainian figures and have not been independently verified.
