A 29-year-old registered sex offender from Oregon has been charged with forgery after prosecutors say they tried to enroll at Maple Grove High School in Minnesota by claiming to be a homeless 17-year-old, according to a criminal complaint reported by CBS Minnesota and MPR News.
Makayla Craig is charged with two counts of aggravated forgery and one count of forgery, all felonies, CBS Minnesota reported. Court documents use they/them pronouns for Craig, MPR News reported.
What police say
Maple Grove police said Craig never completed enrollment and was never on campus or in online classes as a student after school staff raised concerns about the application and contacted police, MPR News reported. The department credited school district staff for their alertness, their quick action to notify a school resource officer and their help with the investigation, according to MPR News.
According to the complaint, a school staff member alerted police Monday. The person completed paperwork under a different name, said they were a homeless 17-year-old from Oregon with no identification and insisted on immediate enrollment, CBS Minnesota reported.
Bail and earlier cases
A judge set bail Friday at $200,000 without conditions or $100,000 with conditions, including no contact with minor children, staying at least three blocks from schools and no contact with Maple Grove High School, CBS Minnesota reported. Craig's next court date is an omnibus hearing on Nov. 18, according to CBS Minnesota.
Craig was convicted in 2023 of sexually abusing a minor and was sentenced last year in Oregon to 20 days in jail after trying to enroll in a high school there by claiming to be 15, CBS Minnesota reported. Craig has been out of compliance as a registered sex offender since Oct. 22, 2025, according to the complaint.
The charges in Minnesota are accusations; Craig has not been convicted in this case.
