Two high-speed passenger trains collided near Urda, in Spain's Toledo province, on Wednesday morning, killing at least 10 people, the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha said.
Esther Padilla, the regional government's spokesperson, gave the toll of at least 10 dead, EFE reported. In remarks broadcast by RTVE, she said the accident was "of considerable seriousness" and that "the figures will probably rise."
Rail infrastructure operator Adif said the collision happened between Mora/Orgaz and Urda, at kilometer point 118, between a Renfe train and an Iryo train that were both running Madrid-Seville. El Mundo put the time of the collision at 8:54 a.m. local time (3:54 a.m. ET).
What officials have said
Padilla said the trains were an AVE and an Iryo and that "we do not know why one of them was stopped," according to RTVE. She later said the Iryo was carrying 147 passengers, including a baby, and the AVE 397, EFE reported. RTVE separately reported the Iryo had 146 passengers.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on X he was "consternado," or deeply shaken, by the accident and was in constant contact with Transport Minister Óscar Puente and Castilla-La Mancha President Emiliano García-Page.
Puente said on X that he had been in Adif's H24 control center since 9:40 a.m. local time "trying to obtain all possible information about what happened." EFE reported that Adif is analyzing all its systems to identify the cause.
Health Minister Mónica García told RTVE: "We do not have all the data on the number of dead and injured."
Emergency response
The 112 Castilla-La Mancha emergency service activated the regional emergency plan, PLATECAM, in its emergency phase at Operational Situation 1 for Toledo at 9:15 a.m. local time. Spain's Interior Ministry said the Guardia Civil had deployed officers in the province.
Renfe opened a family assistance line, 900 10 10 20, under Spain's plan for victims of rail accidents and their families. The government also listed Iryo's line, 900 001 403. EFE reported that Adif will open assistance points at Madrid-Atocha, Sevilla-Santa Justa and Córdoba-Julio Anguita stations.
Line closed
Adif said traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line was interrupted and that all trains on the line were stopped at stations. Renfe said service between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia was interrupted and offered free changes and cancellations on affected trains.
What is not known
Officials have not given an injured count. The cause of the collision has not been officially established; Adif says it is examining its systems. The victims have not been identified, and officials have not said how many people aboard were hurt. Padilla warned the toll is likely to rise.
