Brewers rout Rays 10-1 behind record eight-run fifth, move within a win of first World Series title

Milwaukee scored all eight runs in the fifth with two outs and leads the Series 3-0. Game 4 is Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field.

The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 in Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night at Tropicana Field, scoring eight runs in the fifth inning, all with two outs, to take a 3-0 series lead. Milwaukee is one win from the first championship in franchise history.

No team had scored that many two-out runs in a single World Series inning, MLB.com reported. The Brewers also became the first team to string together seven consecutive hits in a World Series game.

The fifth inning

Milwaukee led 2-0 after RBI singles by Christian Yelich and catcher Contreras in the third. In the fifth, with two on and two out, Contreras hit a ground ball to third baseman Junior Caminero, who threw to second. Yelich was called out on the force play, which would have ended the inning, but the Brewers challenged and the call was overturned, loading the bases, MLB.com reported.

The Rays replaced starter Freddy Peralta, a former Brewer, with Cam Booser. Brice Turang followed with a two-run single, and Garrett Mitchell, Cooper Pratt, Sal Frelick, David Hamilton and Jackson Chourio added run-scoring hits to make it 10-0. Peralta was charged with five runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, and Booser with four runs without recording an out, according to the MLB box score.

Milwaukee had 16 hits and no home runs. Chourio went 4-for-5, finishing one hit short of the World Series single-game record shared by Paul Molitor and Albert Pujols. Contreras had three hits, and Turang and Pratt drove in two runs each.

Brewers starter Robert Gasser allowed one hit and one walk over six scoreless innings, with three strikeouts, and got the win. Brandon Woodruff, pitching for the first time since July 4, gave up the Rays' only run in the ninth, on an RBI hit by Yandy Díaz. Tampa Bay finished with three hits.

"It's definitely deflating," Rays manager Kevin Cash said, according to MLB.com. "How could it not be?"

Game 4

Game 4 is Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field and airs on FOX. The Rays will start Griffin Jax. The Brewers had not announced a starter as of MLB.com's preview.

Teams leading a best-of-seven postseason series 3-0 have gone on to win 42 of 43 times, MLB.com reported. Only the 2004 Red Sox, in the ALCS against the Yankees, came all the way back, and no World Series team has forced a Game 6 after trailing 3-0. Milwaukee, which swept the Dodgers in the NL Championship Series and has won eight straight postseason games, would become the first team to sweep a best-of-seven LCS and the World Series in the same postseason.

"It's 3-0 now, but it starts tomorrow," Díaz said through an interpreter.
