Two DeKalb County, Georgia, police officers were shot Sunday evening while responding to a domestic incident, and police say the man accused of shooting them was wounded when officers returned fire and was taken into custody after he fled into nearby woods.

Police identified the suspect as Demontavious SoHo, 26.

Officers were called to a domestic incident in the 2000 block of Bouldercrest Road at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, police said.

"Once officers arrived on scene they met with the suspect, Demontavious SoHo, who shot both officers," the DeKalb County Police Department said in a news release, as quoted by Decaturish. "Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. SoHo then fled the location and into the woodline."

"He fired on the officers when they encountered him at the door," DeKalb Police Chief Gregory Padrick said at a news conference Sunday night, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "At least one officer was able to return fire."

Officers' condition

Padrick said both officers were in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital, the AJC and 11Alive reported. The department's news release described the officers as being in "moderate condition" at a local hospital, according to Decaturish.

Police have not released the officers' names.

Found with help from cameras

Police say the suspect was taken into custody with a gunshot wound. Padrick said he was taken to a hospital in stable condition, 11Alive reported.

The chief credited nearby cameras with helping officers find him, the AJC reported. Padrick also said officers got a good look at the man as he ran into the woods and broadcast a lookout for him, according to 11Alive.

"We would like to ask for your thoughts and prayers for these officers as they recover," Padrick said, as quoted by 11Alive.

GBI asked to investigate

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to investigate the shooting, per standard protocol, 11Alive reported. WSB-TV reported that the GBI confirmed it had been asked to investigate.

Police had not announced charges as of Monday morning. Investigators have not said what led to the domestic call.
