Hornets to retire Muggsy Bogues' No. 1 jersey on Feb. 11, honoring the shortest player in NBA history

The Charlotte Hornets will retire Muggsy Bogues' No. 1 jersey during a halftime ceremony at their game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2027, at Spectrum Center, the team announced Tuesday. ESPN's Shams Charania first reported the date.

At 5-foot-3, Bogues is the shortest player in NBA history. He will be the third player in franchise history to have his number retired, after Bobby Phills (No. 13) and Dell Curry (No. 30), the Hornets said.

"To have my number retired alongside Bobby and Dell is an incredible honor," Bogues said in the team's announcement. "I can't wait to share this night with my family and the fans who have been with us since the beginning."

Franchise records

Charlotte selected Bogues in the 1988 expansion draft after his rookie season with the Washington Bullets. He played 632 games over 10 seasons with the Hornets, from 1988-89 through 1997-98, and averaged 8.8 points, 8.8 assists and 1.7 steals, according to the team. He retired as the franchise's career leader in assists (5,557), steals (1,067) and minutes (19,768), the team said. His 10.7 assists per game in 1989-90 remain the team's single-season record.

The Hornets made four playoff appearances with Bogues, including the franchise's first playoff series win, in 1993, according to the team. He played 14 NBA seasons in all.

"At 5-foot-3, he overcame obstacles throughout his career and proved he belonged among the best players in the world," Hornets co-chairmen Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin said in a statement.
