The Milwaukee Brewers get another chance to win their first World Series title Wednesday night after the Tampa Bay Rays rallied in the 12th inning of Game 4 to stay alive.
Milwaukee leads the best-of-seven series 3-1. Game 5 is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Fox, MLB.com said. Jacob Misiorowski will start for the Brewers. Rays manager Kevin Cash said after Game 4 that he had not decided on a starter, The Associated Press reported, and MLB.com and an AP game preview still listed Tampa Bay's starter as to be determined early Wednesday.
Game 4: Rays 4, Brewers 3 (12 innings)
Rookie Cooper Pratt put Milwaukee three outs from a sweep with a tiebreaking home run off Ian Seymour in the top of the 12th, his fourth hit of the night, AP reported. Pratt became the first rookie to hit an extra-inning home run in the World Series, according to AP.
In the bottom half, third baseman Joey Ortiz made a throwing error on Junior Caminero's leadoff grounder against reliever Antonio Senzatela. Liam Hicks singled off Shane Drohan, and Jonny DeLuca singled home pinch-runner Cedric Mullins to tie the game at 3. After Chandler Simpson's single loaded the bases, Milwaukee went to a five-man infield. Pinch-hitter Ben Williamson, who had been 1 for 15 in the postseason, chopped a single over first baseman Jake Bauers into right field to win it, according to AP.
"We've got a lot of fight in us. We're never going to shy away," Simpson said, according to AP.
David Hamilton homered for Milwaukee, and Jackson Chourio had two hits to improve to 10 for 20 in the series, AP reported. The loss ended the Brewers' eight-game winning streak. MLB.com said it was Milwaukee's first loss since Oct. 6, in Game 3 of the National League Division Series against San Diego.
History and health
Tampa Bay is just the fifth of 26 teams that fell behind 3-0 in the World Series to win Game 4, and the previous four all lost Game 5, according to AP. The only team to come back from 3-0 down in any best-of-seven postseason series is the 2004 Boston Red Sox, against the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series.
Caminero left Game 4 with an ailing left foot but said he would play Wednesday. "He'll play tomorrow on one leg. I'll make sure of it," Cash said, according to AP.
Both bullpens were stretched. MLB.com reported that the Rays used seven pitchers in Game 4, including Nick Martinez, a possible Game 5 starter, for two innings in relief. Cash said Drew Rasmussen is unlikely to pitch on three days' rest, according to MLB.com. Milwaukee used eight pitchers, MLB.com said.
Misiorowski threw the fastest pitch ever recorded in a World Series, a 103.5 mph fastball to open Game 1, in which he pitched five innings and allowed one run in a Brewers win, according to MLB.com.
If Tampa Bay wins Wednesday, the series returns to Milwaukee.
