Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations said Saturday it has arrested Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, a police officer it described as a suspect wanted in connection with the murders of prominent Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu and Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
Sang "had been on the run" and was arrested by detectives from DCI headquarters acting on what the agency called actionable intelligence that led them to Eldoret town in Uasin Gishu County, the DCI said in a statement posted on X.
Stopped on Uganda Road
Detectives intercepted Sang on Uganda Road in Eldoret's central business district as he drove a silver Toyota Fielder, registration number KCM 508L, according to the DCI. At the time, the agency said, he was "reportedly in the process of selling the vehicle to raise money for his daily upkeep."
Sang was escorted to Eldoret Police Station "for processing pending arraignment," the DCI said. The agency called his arrest "a significant breakthrough in the two investigations" and said detectives "are now pursuing further leads to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killings and determine whether other individuals were involved."
"No rank, status or affiliation places anyone above the law," the DCI said. Citizen Digital carried the same DCI statement.
What is not known
The DCI statement did not say when Sang will appear in court or what charges, if any, he will face. No murder charge against him has been announced. The DCI did not say when exactly the arrest took place or what role it believes Sang played in either killing.
