A large structure fire at a Pacific Seafood plant on Newport, Oregon's Bayfront on Sunday morning prompted Level 3 "Go Now" evacuations within a one-mile radius because of possible ammonia contamination, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said, according to FOX 12 (KPTV).
The fire is burning at 213 Southwest Bay Boulevard, home to a Pacific Seafood plant, the sheriff's office said, FOX 12 reported. The blaze broke out Sunday morning, and crews were still battling it as of the station's latest update.
Authorities urged people in the area to stay inside if possible and to wear a mask if they have to go outside, FOX 12 reported. An evacuation shelter was set up at Sam Case Elementary School, at 459 Northeast 12th Street; pets are welcome, according to the station.
The City of Newport shared video of the fire on its official Facebook page, FOX 12 said. Pacific Seafood had not issued a public statement that could be confirmed for this report.
What is not known
Officials had not publicly reported injuries in the FOX 12 account. The cause of the fire, the extent of any ammonia release, and damage to the plant were not detailed in that report. Relays that described an "ammonia tank explosion" were not used.
